Progress Through Knowledge

Flatwork Finisher and Technician:

Download the registration form.

A Concrete Flatwork Finisher/Technician is a craftsman who has demonstrated the ability to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect concrete flatwork.

A Concrete Flatwork Technician is a person who is knowledgeable about proper procedures to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect concrete flatwork, but who lacks sufficient work experience to qualify as a concrete flatwork finisher.

Program Overview:

The topics include basic concrete technology, concrete materials and mixes, concrete control tests, finishing tools and techniques, placing and finishing procedures, jointing, curing, protection and common problems.

Requirements:

To qualify for certification you must:

  1. Submit completed registration form and appropriate fee by deadline date, which is two weeks prior to the examination.
  2. Submit Form D-5 by examination date.
  3. Attend a one-day training course.
  4. Obtain a passing grade (70%) on the written examination.

In addition, you must meet one of the following:

  • Substantiate three years (4500 hours) or more of concrete finishing related work. This work experience must be attested to by your employer or supervisor by affidavit on Form D-5.
  • Substantiate one year (1500 hours) or more of concrete finishing related work. This work experience must be attested to by your employer or supervisor by affidavit on Form D-5.
  • Pass a field performance examination.

Certification Program:

The written examination questions will be covered in the training course. ACI technical materials will be provided to all applicants. The written exam will take two hours.

The performance examination (if necessary) will be done on a designated job site and will take seven to ten hours, depending on weather conditions. During the examination, each applicant must place, finish, edge, joint, and begin curing on a concrete slab. The examination is based on the material found in ACI publication CCS-1, "Concrete Craftsman Series: Slabs on Grade", Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Special arrangements must be made for the performance
exam at least one month in advance.

We look forward to hearing from you.
